You live only once

A taste of life
Or a spicy strife

A taste of love
Or a bitter-sweet trove

A dangerous potion
Or a heady emotion

A challenging do
Or a mind blowing hue

A personal run
Or a search for fun

A state of matter
Or a drink on a platter

Give yourself a chance
You but live only once....

Note: Rather short and snappy....but saying it in style.

Arrogant Soul

We met in a gorgeous lift
Life took a welcome shift

Eyes blinked in pleasure
That no scale could measure

Hands we contentedly held
Distances were qualitatively shelled

Hearts beat in unison
This was a paradise prison

Minds met like never before
Compatibility beat every other score

Souls met in celestial glory
This was a stark new love story

Years of spouse's shrewd company
Had never churned up such nectarine honey

Bodies fitted with natural sensuality
Love makings defied the known quality

The minutes changed to a couple of years
And then suddenly it was time for tears

Realization rudely pricked my conscience
Oh God, does this love have a clearance

Social bindings pulled us back
That spouses shouldn't be hurt was the crack

Clandestine love was never my style
But he wanted me with him every mile

Sanity prevailed and I vouched for a 'No'
He promised me he would die if I should go

Love was pure and care was true
Yet it didn't seem fair to continue

Breaking off would be like losing a life
A friend, a lover and a soulmate should we knife

I confusedly feared we were fiercely out of norm
He arrogantly claimed we were on the 'right' side of the wrong.....

Note: This poem captures an emotional upheavel and rationalises the depth of pure love between two people...to do a right thing for it is right , is a right thing to do....This poem starts out very sweetly, and ends in a sort of bittersweet way....

To tell the truth

You
are my
life and strife,
hope and mope,
You
make me
vile and smile,
think and blink.

We get along
so well,
In paradise
we dwell,
I share
with you
my heart and soul,
Every breathe
and me as a whole.

I will
miss you
when you
are gone,
Routine will be
my every single morn,
Tears will prick
my soul like thorn.

But go
you have to,
For I am
hopelessly torn,
Compulsion raises
its commanding head,
There is no way
on this damned earth,
No, I cannot
share with you
a single dawn.....

Note: Loving someone also requires that he knows where he stands....

Starry Starry Night

Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know
the darkness in my soul.

Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.

Colors changing hue,
morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath
the artist's loving hand.

For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.

And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life,
as lovers often do.

But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.

Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken
on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know
what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.

They would not listen,
they're not listening still.
Perhaps they never will...

These are the lyrics of Starry Starry Night,Vincent Van Gogh's work set to the song "Vincent" by Don McLean.

The Bright and the Burning One

The "Red Planet"
Of the "God of War"
The fascinating Ares
Second only to Venus
In brightness and charm
Hated by his parents
Zeus and Hera
And sister Athene
Who believed he was
"A thing of rage
A two faced liar
Entirely made of evil"....

He loved combat
And desired violence
Taking pleasure in it
Losing his temper
Was his forte
Being hotheaded
In battles he fought
In return, he reaped
Displeasure of the Gods
And humans alike
He was murderous
A bloodstained man-killer.....

But also wasn’t he
Known widely to be
A coward who ran away
When wounded in battle
Running back to his father
Who rejected him easily
And hence naturally
No holy places
Were built for him
No sacred place was
Associated with him......

But what was more
Aphrodite loved him
And his love making
Today he represents
Power and purpose
To slay inner dragons
Mars is the quick action
Of the gut and not the head
The connection between
Sex and aggression
Desire and action....

The incense of Mars
Lies in Man because
A prominent Mars
Sees him excel at sports
In science, medicine
Honor and military
What else does a country need
But fearless men with
Worthwhile deeds.....

Note: The incense of Mars...Based on a Greek Mythology, this poem, written on 1 January 2011 was dedicated to a soldier friend of mine ...

Amongst The Lilies

Brave
Arrogant
Debonair
He charged
Up the slope
Of death.

Nonchalant smile
Melted my heart
As I stooped
To pick him up
Lying battered
Amongst The Lilies.

Stubborn
Was he
To cheat
the certain hour
Clasped
In my pining arms
To kiss me adieu
Amongst The Lilies.

His soul merged in mine
Heroic I rose in shadow of my Gods
And enact the part of living.

We live for ourselves and we live for others. Virtues of human intimacy is showcased in this poem penned by MS Jaswal.
